Trump Suggests Arming 5% of Teachers To Stop School Shootings

Former U.S. President and potential 2024 presidential candidate, Donald Trump, spoke exclusively to Breitbart News after his speech at the National Rifle Association (NRA) gathering in Indianapolis. When asked about the cause of mass shootings in the country, Trump stated that the mental health crisis, caused largely by drugs flowing across the border, is the primary reason.

“More than anything else it’s mental health and a lot of it is caused by drugs — the drugs are flowing in,”

“We had it down to about a 32-year-low at the border. I heard today they’re 10 times higher than just three years ago. Can you imagine that? But I think more than anything else it’s mental health, by far. And a lot of that mental health is caused by drugs.”

Trump’s Plan To Prevent School Shootings

Trump believes that if just 5% of teachers across the nation were armed, school shootings would come to an end. He called for a tax credit to allow qualified teachers to obtain firearms to protect students. Trump suggests that many of these teachers are military or law enforcement veterans who are familiar with firearms and can handle them well. He stated that if they qualify at a high level, they should be permitted to take arms into classrooms with them.

Qualified Teachers As Solution To School Shootings

Trump suggests that arming only 5% of the nation’s teachers would effectively address the issue of school shootings, which cannot be resolved by hiring security guards alone. He argues that many of these teachers possess the skills of trained security guards and are proficient marksmen. Additionally, he emphasizes that these teachers have an inherent motivation to protect their students, making them an ideal defense against any potential threat, saying:

“So you have teachers that are military vets — and I’m talking about people that know how to handle firearms, because that’s a talent,”

“Police officers. But you have teachers that are very good with firearms. You don’t need many. I would say 5 percent — that would be a lot. You could never hire that many security guards. They have every bit as much talent in many cases — they’re champion shooters and everything else. If they qualify at a very high level, I would let them take arms in with them. They also have the added asset of loving the students. They love the students. So if they qualify I would have them take arms in with them. In addition, I would have armed security at the front doors et cetera, but you would stop it. If people thought that randomly the teachers have guns, they wouldn’t go into the schools. You let everyone know that a lot of teachers are going to have guns — some people say 15 percent but I would say 5 percent is enough. If some wacko thinks that some of these teachers they’re going to walk into have guns and they’re expert and really know how to use them, you’re not going to have a problem anymore. They’re not going to have to use them.”

According to Trump, if teachers were armed, it would deter potential school shooters from carrying out their plans, as they would know that they could face armed opposition. This could potentially eliminate the threat of school shootings, as many shooters may be deterred by the possibility of being stopped quickly. Another suggestion that has been discussed for preventing school shootings is to have a police officer stationed in every school, effectively serving as a security guard.
