Federal authorities arrested a Mexican state attorney general in San Diego—for trafficking drugs across the border.

Edgar Veytia, who had been the Attorney General of the touristy, low-crime Mexican state of Nayarit since 2013, had long been suspected by the Mexican press of having ties to the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel.

According to the FBI, Veytia used the nickname “Diablo,” as he worked with a criminal syndicate to distribute drugs like heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana.

Veytia has been charged with conspiring to smuggle and sell heroin, and conspiring to smuggle and sell cocaine.

In addition to likely jail time, U.S. prosecutors are also seeking $250 million in fines from Veytia, if he’s convicted of his crimes.
