Liberal comedy show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee mocked a young conservative man for his hair—and was forced to apologize after it was revealed that he has incurable Stage 4 brain cancer.
Bee aired a video showing young conservatives at annual conference CPAC last month, as Full Frontal correspondent Mike Rubens mocked them for having “Nazi hair” in a voiceover.
“Just last year, CPAC was dominated by Ted Cruz supporters and chirpy little [expletive] with bow ties,” explained Rubens.
He added: “This year, the bow ties were gone and replaced by Nazi hair. Nazi hair. Nazi hair. And CPAC was definitely Trump country.”
But one of the attendees Full Frontal accused of having “Nazi hair” turned out to be Kyle Coddington, a 20-year-old man who was diagnosed with an aggressive, incurable brain cancer. He finished his first round of chemotherapy the day before CPAC.
Coddington’s sister, Megan, was the first to draw attention to Full Frontal’s horrible error—tweeting: “When @iamsambee makes fun of your brother for having ‘Nazi hair.’ He actually has stage 4 brain cancer, but whatever floats your boat.”
Kyle later took to Twitter himself—showing good humor about the whole situation, asking Bee to take down the clip because he “look[ed] like a balding potato.”
Full Frontal quickly removed the video from the internet, and issued a statement explaining that they had already called Kyle and his family to apologize. “We wish him all the best in his fight against cancer and sincerely, deeply regret offending him and his family,” they said.
Bee also personally apologized via Twitter, explaining that she and her colleagues had only learned of Kyle’s condition after the segment aired.
To their credit, Full Frontal didn’t stop there, taking it a step further by donating $1,000 to Kyle through his GoFundMe page, to assist with his treatment—along with the note, “We wish you the best, Kyle!”
