President Trump welcomed Josh Holt, an American who married a Venezuelan in 2016, to the White House on Saturday. The Venezuelans imprisoned Holt, claiming the Utah man was a top CIA spy with a with assault weapons and grenades. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee worked for months to secure the release, culminating in a meeting with Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro on Friday; Maduro was angling for sanctions relief. The White House stood firm, saying that no sanctions relief would be forthcoming until Venezuela released their political prisoners and held free elections. Were it not for the president’s tough sanctions policy, there would have been no leverage to force Maduro’s hand.
