The area we know as DC was given to the Federal government by Maryland and if it were to stop being the capital that land would be given back to Maryland. An article in the Princeton Tory also notes that a reading of Article IV in the constitution forbids the creation of a new state form the land of another. Turning DC into a state is not only a bad idea,  it’s also illegal.
