Talk about a bridge too far! Democrats are bad with history, but this should be recent enough for them to know better. They actually preparing to do battle over the gun issue, and that has liberal beltway insiders nervous. Here’s why.
 
In 1994, Democrats pushed Clinton to sign the Assault Weapons Ban, and Republicans took the House for the first time in decades in a wave. In 2000, George Bush was taking on Al Gore in favorable economic conditions, and pounded Gore on guns before winning narrowly. After Sandy Hook when the Democrats made noises about gun control, Republicans crushed them in the 2014 midterms. This isn’t a winner for Democrats.
 
Yet, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)has cosponsored a “military-style weapons ban” with Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), who represents Parkland. Her weight behind the bill is a rare boost to a bill, but her name means that Republicans can now say, “Pelosi is coming for your guns” to every Second Amendment voter in America. 
 
If Democrats are too foolish to learn from history, Republicans will be all to happy to teach them. President Trump may have a fun election night in November because this is exactly the wrong fight for Democrats to pick with him.
