It’s hard to get clean, concise facts about the budget. The media politicizes the budget to blast President Trump to the point that the truth becomes a casualty, not a priority. This is a clean list of numbers, with some background information to put them in context. The Trump White House’s top-line budget request is a massive $4.407 Trillion.
An important note of context is that just because the White House is working within Congress’ framework as the appropriators, that doesn’t mean that the White House is encouraging every dollar to be spent without reform. To the contrary, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said in a news conference on Monday, “There are two primary messages: Number one, you don’t have to spend all of this money, Congress. But if you do, here is how we would prefer to see you spend it … And the other message is that we do not have to have trillion-dollar deficits forever.”
