President Trump is taking fire from the media and their favorite Republican, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for a throwaway “Congratulations” for Putin’s “win” in Russia’s election. McCain tweeted that the president “insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election.”
In combing the internet, there seems to be no record of the supposedly bipartisan Senator slamming President Barack Obama for doing the same. It’s almost as if Sen. McCain likes Obama better than President Trump!
Had the Trump White House praised the wondrous evolution of Russian democracy, such an attack may be understandable. Rather, McCain is defining his legacy by pandering for media praise instead of fretting whether he is consistent, or even coherent in his criticism.
McCain’s love affair with the same media that conveniently forgets Obama’s similar congratulations, also seems to forget Obama mocking Mitt Romney for recognizing Russia as a geopolitical foe; or Obama telling Medvedev that he “would have more flexibility after the [2012] election.” President Trump was fulfilling his diplomatic duties as President, which is more than McCain will ever be able to say.
