The organization funded by the late billionaire Charles Koch, known for his association with Koch Industries, a multinational corporation that thrives on lenient trade and immigration policies, has initiated an online propaganda campaign against former President Donald Trump, to the tune of $70 million. Their claim suggests that a Trump nomination in 2024 would inadvertently result in President Joe Biden securing a second term. However, this assertion lacks substance as Trump is widely considered the frontrunner for the GOP and numerous polls indicate he is polling ahead of Biden for the upcoming 2024 Presidential election.
The Koch brothers, Charles and David Koch, attained their wealth through their involvement in Koch Industries, a diversified conglomerate inherited from their father. They expanded the company’s reach into industries such as oil refining, chemicals, and commodities trading, transforming it into a multinational corporation. Their business operations have benefited from relaxed free-trade regulations, allowing them to capitalize on cheap labor from both illegal immigrants and third-world countries.
The “Biden’s Secret Weapon” ad targets key primary states like Iowa, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Nevada. It reveals the Koch brothers’ desire for a moderate candidate like Chris Christie or reelecting Joe Biden. Americans for Prosperity Action, funded by the Koch network, shared an exclusive preview of this orchestrated attack with CNBC, which gladly supported the Koch brothers network.
Despite benefiting from Trump’s presidency through tax reductions and conservative Supreme Court appointments, the Koch network chose to focus on minor disagreements with Trump, particularly his tough stance on China’s unfair trade practices. They likely favor illegal immigration and overseas production for cheap labor. In their ads, they selectively reference polls indicating a majority of voters oppose Trump’s return, while ignoring the significant portion of voters unenthusiastic about Biden’s re-election. Notably, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is polling at around 20% against President Joe Biden.
The Koch-funded organization has yet to announce its endorsement for a Republican candidate in the presidential primary, likely aware of the negative impact they have on those they support.
Charles Koch, with a net worth exceeding $50 billion, intended in 2019 to utilize his wealth to advocate for an overhaul of the nation’s immigration system. This included granting permanent legal status to young individuals who arrived in the country illegally, as revealed in an email obtained by TIME and confirmed by a Koch spokesperson. The Koch brothers’ network also operates a Hispanic lobbying organization called “The LIBRE Initiative,” which actively worked to undermine many of Trump’s immigration policies.
In 2022, the Koch brothers’ donor network sought support from both Republicans and Democrats by proposing a blend of unspecified “border security” measures and amnesty for all DACA enrollees, allowing them to remain in the country. This lobbying effort coincided with admissions from senior officials in President Joe Biden’s administration that the southern border could witness a monthly influx of 480,000 to 500,000 border crossers and undocumented immigrants.
In 2018, Trump commented on the Koch brothers, saying:
“The globalist Koch Brothers, who have become a total joke in real Republican circles, are against Strong Borders and Powerful Trade. I never sought their support because I don’t need their money or bad ideas. They love my Tax & Regulation Cuts, Judicial picks & more. I made them richer. Their network is highly overrated, I have beaten them at every turn. They want to protect their companies outside the U.S. from being taxed, I’m for America First & the American Worker – a puppet for no one. Two nice guys with bad ideas. Make America Great Again!”
