President Trump has parted ways with the top lawyer at the Department of Homeland Security.

President Trump nominated John Mitnick in 2017 and he has served in the role up until his firing.

According to The Hill:

The White House has fired John Mitnick, who served as the general counsel for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the department confirmed Mitnick’s exit to the news publication, saying: “We thank John for this service, and we wish him well.”

The official also told the paper that Chad Mizelle, an associate counsel to the president, will fill the position in Mitnick’s place.

Mitnick, who was nominated to the post by President Trump in 2017 and confirmed by the Senate the following year, was the department’s fifth general counsel.

Many top officials have departed at the Department of Homeland Security amid increased tensions with the White House over immigration policy.
