President Biden is shaping up to become the most pro-Russia president in modern history. Yesterday, a report by Axios revealed that the Biden administration will waive sanctions on the corporate entity and CEO which oversees the construction of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline into Germany.

Nord Stream 2, which will be completed by summer barring any major interventions, will be a major geopolitical win for Russia’s President Putin. The pipeline will undoubtedly increase Putin’s leverage in Europe by giving him a stranglehold over natural gas supplies in Europe that directly affect U.S. allies.

Now, instead of sanctioning the company responsible for the pipeline, the State Department plans to sanction some Russian ships but sources say that the only way to stop the nearly completed pipeline would be to sanction the German end-users of the pipeline.

The report claims the move is being made for the best of America’s national interests however notes that it directly goes against previous comments by Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

During Blinken’s confirmation hearing he said, “I am determined to do whatever we can to prevent that completion,” referring to Nord Stream 2.

Per the Axios report:

“The Biden administration has been clear that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a Russian geopolitical project that threatens European energy security and that of Ukraine and eastern flank NATO allies and partners,” the spokesperson said.

The Biden administration claims its ultimate goal is to see the pipeline not go into use as it will have severe implications to NATO partners and allies. However, the move to waive sanctions gives Putin a clear path forward.

Russian gas currently has to pass through Ukraine on its way to Europe. Bypassing Ukraine with a direct pipeline to Germany is an opportunity for Russia to advance its goal of isolating its former client state, now a fledgling democracy, from Western Europe.

Russia has a long track record of cutting critical supplies to its neighbors during disputes, including cutting off gas to Ukraine.

It’s become increasingly clear that Biden’s promise to be tough on Russia was just another empty campaign promise. The report also comes after Biden immediately ended construction on the Keystone XL pipeline after his inauguration and not even a week since the Colonial Pipeline was hacked. The move has caused lawmakers to question why President Biden is tough on America yet weak on our enemies.
