According to a recent poll conducted by Monmouth, a majority of Republican voters are of the opinion that Trump is the most formidable candidate to face Biden in the 2024 primary. Specifically, 45% of respondents perceive Trump as unquestionably strong, while 18% consider him likely strong. In contrast, only 32% believe that another Republican candidate would outperform Trump. The survey revealed that Trump holds a significant lead over DeSantis by 24 points, with 43% of the Republican support compared to DeSantis’ 19%. Both candidates enjoy high favorability ratings among Republicans, with Trump at 77% and DeSantis at 73%. The poll was conducted among 655 Republican voters, with a margin of error of 5.5%, prior to DeSantis entering the GOP primary.

The survey asked respondents to rate the Republican candidate’s likelihood of defeating President Joe Biden in 2024, regardless of their current support for Donald Trump. Results showed that 63% believed Trump had the greatest chance of winning, while 32% preferred another candidate.

According to Breitbart:

The poll asked respondents, “Regardless of whether you currently support Donald Trump, which of the following statements comes closest to your view about which Republican has the best chance to win in 2024”

Although Trump crushes DeSantis, both candidates have high favorability ratings among Republicans: Trump 77 percent, DeSantis 73 percent.

Trump “holds an advantage in practically every Republican voting bloc, with the noticeable exception of college graduates,” the poll found. “Three months ago, DeSantis led among major demographic groups within the party.”

Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said DeSantis has yet to make a case why GOP voters should vote for him over Trump.

“DeSantis lost ground even before he got out of the starting gate. Republican voters still like him, but they haven’t heard a convincing case for why he would be the party’s best option,” Murray said.

Trump’s commanding lead over DeSantis by 24 points, with 43% support compared to DeSantis’ 19%, reinforces his status as the front-runner in the GOP primary. Trump’s dominance in the polls is evident, and both he and DeSantis enjoy high favorability ratings among Republicans, with Trump at 77% and DeSantis at 73%. However, Trump’s popularity clearly outweighs that of DeSantis. These findings, derived from a sample of 655 Republican voters, underscore Trump’s overwhelming influence within the party. While DeSantis has yet to effectively sway GOP voters, these results firmly establish Trump as a formidable contender in the 2024 primary.
