In a recent poll by Morning Consult conducted from May 26-28, former President Donald Trump emerges as the clear frontrunner in the Republican primary, leading Governor Ron DeSantis by a significant margin of 34 points. Among Republican voters, Trump garners support from 56%, while DeSantis only secures 22%. Notably, other contenders like Mike Pence, Nikki Haley, and Tim Scott trail behind with single-digit percentages, or less.

Furthermore, the poll reveals Trump’s popularity among GOP hopefuls, with an impressive favorability rating of 79%. However, in hypothetical general matchups, both Trump and President Biden receive an equal share of support from voters at 43%, while DeSantis falls behind at 40%.

The survey encompasses 3,485 potential GOP primary voters, with a margin of error of 2 points, and samples around 4,000 registered voters overall, with a margin of error of 1 point. These results align with other polls, affirming Trump’s commanding lead in the Republican primary and indicating that Republican voters perceive him as the strongest candidate to challenge Biden in the 2024 election.

According to Breitbart:

While the 34-point lead is slightly less than Trump’s lead earlier in May when the same pollster showed Trump leading by 43 points, that constricting appears to have happened per the pollster before DeSantis’s announcement.

“Trump leads DeSantis, 56% to 22%, following the Florida governor’s May 24 announcement,” Morning Consult’s Eli Yokley wrote. “The 34-percentage point advantage marks a 10-point decline in the former president’s lead since mid-May, but much of that dip came before DeSantis officially began his bid.”

DeSantis also performed worse than Trump against Biden in a hypothetical general matchup among all voters. Forty-three percent said they would vote for Biden, while 40 percent backed DeSantis. Meanwhile, the voters split their support behind both Trump and Biden at 43 percent each.

In addition, the poll found Trump is the most popular candidate among GOP hopefuls at 79 percent. Seventy-one percent viewed DeSantis favorably, 57 percent viewed Pence favorably, and 49 percent viewed Haley favorably.

Trump has garnered significant backing from Republican voters, with a solid 56% support, while DeSantis trails far behind with a mere 22% support. Although there has been a slight decrease in Trump’s lead since mid-May, much of it took place before DeSantis officially joined the race. In hypothetical general matchups, both Trump and President Biden attract equal support, while DeSantis falls behind.

The poll also highlights Trump’s impressive popularity among GOP voters, boasting an impressive favorability rating of 79%. Overall, these findings indicate that Trump continues to exert a commanding presence in the Republican primary, with a substantial number of Republican voters perceiving him as the strongest contender against Biden in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
