Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has responded to speculation regarding his potential role as Vice President under former President Donald Trump. DeSantis clarified his preference to remain as governor rather than becoming Trump’s running mate, citing the limited authority associated with the Vice President position. In an interview on the “Wisconsin Right Now” radio show, DeSantis addressed the question by stating:

“I don’t think so. I’m not a No. 2 guy.” Adding, “It’s a little bit presumptuous to be doing that at this stage.”

DeSantis further emphasized his focus on winning the early primaries, prioritizing his current role as governor, saying:

“I’m here to win the early primaries, and that’s what we’ve got to do first,”

Regarding his own selection for a vice presidential candidate, DeSantis stated that it is premature to discuss such matters at this point. He emphasized his primary focus on winning the early primaries and stressed the importance of accomplishing that goal first.

Recent tensions have arisen between DeSantis and Trump, with Trump openly criticizing the disorganization of DeSantis’ campaign. These tensions signify a broader lack of unity within the GOP, which is further exemplified by former Vice President Mike Pence’s critique of Trump’s suitability for the presidency following the events of the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. Pence has subsequently embarked on his own campaign, challenging his former colleague.
