President Biden has officially rescinded the Trump administration’s remain-in-Mexico policy in a move to continue dismantling Trump’s immigration programs. The policy made asylum-seekers wait in Mexico until their immigration court dates.

In a memo ending the program Tuesday, Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said the MPP program did not help with enhancing the border management.

The move was first reported by Reuters.

President Biden paused MPP shortly after taking office on Jan 20., and has allowed into the country around 11,000 people who were in the program according to Reuters.

Since Biden’s inauguration, the border crisis has spiraled out of control and quickly overwhelmed border agents.

Trump slammed the Biden administration’s decision to rescind the policy in a recently released statement.

“Remain in Mexico, also known as MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols), was not only a historic foreign policy triumph but one of the most successful border security programs anyone has ever put into effect anywhere. Along with our Central America Safe Third agreements, asylum reforms, and expedited removal procedures we drove border numbers to record lows and we ENDED the horrendous practice known as Catch-and-Release,” Trump said.
